My first visit left me with great impressions. For a few hours I was back in time learning about the birth of Alexandria and more. That was complimented with a Lecture about George Washington. A must visit for all.

A regional museum that informs the visitor of Alexandria's complex history. I like the way it tracks the rise of the town until the devastation of the American Civil War, and then the struggle to find relevance then after. The physical development of the town is explained. Special exhibitions are good (March 2019): Alexandria and WW1; and a display of clothing items from the 19th century. The building, respectfully restored, is a fine example of early architecture in the town. Well worth a visit.

The Lyceum is a free museum in Old Towne Alexandria. It contains information of historical people and events of Alexandria. Also, included are artifacts and some furniture of pre and after Civil War years. Cute gift shop. Upper level can be rented for events.

The 50th Alexandria Scottish  Christmas Walk Parade was held along the streets around City Hall. The parade consisted of Scottish military bands, city dignitaries, and period reenactors, and Santa, to mention just a few of the parade participants. The parade was well received and there was great weather for the event.

I have Autism. City of Alexandria has miserably failed me. City of Alexandria is one of the worst places for Autistic people to live. If you have Autism, do NOT come to live here. Most services only have a phone number. I cannot talk on the phone. Even when I leave a written message where I can, they CALL me back and offer me to CALL them back. City of Alexandria does not care about Autistic people. The noise ordinance is a bad joke. They literally do not do anything. I have neighbors with two extremely loud dogs. The dogs bark all day, every day. I experience multiple sensory overloads every day. It got so bad that I want to kill myself. When I wrote to Animal Control, she CALLED me and left a voicemail. In the voicemail, she said - "Oh look, they are so happy to see you!" After that, my family member who can talk on the phone, made multiple complaints. Absolutely nothing was done. Most of the times, they did not even bother to show up. There are no outdoor fire pit use ordinances either. When all of my neighbors start using their smoky fire pits at once, I literally cannot breath, even inside my house. I have hypersensory perception. There is always endless loud (100+ Db) construction going on, especially in the warmer months. The mayor is a busy buddy. The construction noise got so bad that even owls which lived in a park nearby left, because they could not get any sleep during the day. There are many idiots living in the city who have altered their car motors to draw more fuel and sound incredibly loud (120+ Db) and atrocious and use these cars to run an illegal race along Duke Street and I-395 in the middle of the night. Neither City of Alexandria nor Alexandria PD seem to do anything about it. City of Alexandria could not care less about people like me. If you have Autism, please do NOT come to live in this wretched city - or you will suffer like I do.

Alexandria, VA  has a rich colonial port city past, modern walkable parks flanking the beautiful Potomac river, unique stores, small museums, farmers markets and all manner of creative arts, civics and business within close proximity to the nations capital.

It was so much fun to visit the apothecary! Every item there is original and stays not touched for almost 100 years.
Good to book tickets in advance, because groups are not large.
For citizens of Alexandria - no charge 😉

Lots to learn. Well informed staff. Not something you see every day.  Honestly it was the reason that we made the trip to Alexandria

Interesting pharmacy museum. I gave it three stars instead of four or five because

1) I don’t care for being forced into guided tours.

2) The tour was too short (30 minutes)

3) We were supervised like little school children. I understand that everything in the building is historical and needs to be preserved, but while we were in courage to ask questions, they were also quick to usher us out to receive the last tour of the day. I spent more time getting to the museum than I did actually getting to enjoy it. If I had never visited a pharmacy museum before or an apothecary museum before, I would have been even more disappointed.

Another fun place and much less creepy than the catacombs, lol. There are two library complexes, and two sphinx like statues besides the pillar.

The have a nice cafeteria/cafe as well as two shops for souvenirs. Walking around the complex is fun and it's quiet - a treat if you're tired of all the cars.

My family visited this place with a tour guide. It is a nice place to visit while in Alexandria. Beautiful sceneries surrounded with many ancient remains.

Very beautiful historical site, it was once the great Serapeum of Alexandria with the famous Pompey’s Pillar, the site is Greco-Roman and full with history that shows us how great this site was in its golden times, there are also an underground remains of the small library of Alexandria(the smaller version of the famous great one), and also an underground sanctuary with a replica statue of Apis bull, overall it was a very nice attraction and worth checking out.

What a fun place to visit with a such an interesting creation story.

Known as the Spite House because it was supposedly built in an alley out of spite when the owner was annoyed with people driving through his alley, this narrow home is 7 feed wide! It is the narrowest home in all of the United States.

It makes for a fun photo shoot as you walk past.

The "Hollenbury Spike House" is just 7 feet wide and 25 feet deep. The story goes, the original owner built the  house in 1830 because he was annoyed by loud alley loiters. Would love to see the layout inside.

Fascinating home, only 7 feet wide, said to be the narrowest home in Alexandria and beyond. We restrained ourselves and didn't knock on the door, even though we would have loved a peek inside.

This is a wonderful seminary, a supportive and healthy community, and an excellent place for formation. The library is also excellent.

Absolutely serene and beautiful!  The new chapel is breathtaking!

Wonderful historic house tour, one of the very best that I have taken.  Much important historical activity had its beginning in the dining room of that house.  It is both well preserved and restored where needed with many original pieces.  Woodwork in perfect condition.   The house itself has.an unique history and I encourage you to explore it yourself.  Barbara made it informative and entertaining.
Parking is easy and you are in easy walking distance of the waterfront and old Town.  The cost is modest for such a great tour of a striking Georgian house.

Good, short activity if you are into historical tours. Not a very big space. But the staffs were friendly and the guided tour was good too. Had a good experience.

The walking tour takes about 40 min with a short movie explaining the history of Carlyle. The tour costs $5 per adult and it is at the top of the hour. It was interesting to hear and see some of that history. When we went the AC was not working so it was so hot inside!

St. Paul's Episcopal Parrish is a very inclusive and engaged spiritual community with a clergy that is grounded in tradition with contemporary views, real life experiences, and godly values.

I urge wariness of superficial "niceness" and even the well-delivered "love-themed" sermons, in which, the concept, tellingly, is mostly presented in the abstract.

I attended 2 yrs leading up to COVID and what began positively ended sadly as I observed/experienced rather low standards re: treatment of volunteers and careless business practices.  Also, I wouldn't post this if they'd been willing to work things out, internally, as I strongly preferred.

To recap, I was new to both the Episcopal church and St. Paul's and I was not even a member, yet, when the Rector asked me to serve as Assistant Treasurer. I eagerly accepted and initially loved the church and my volunteer role. But then around the 1 yr mark, coincidentally about the time when I began wondering if the Church had much interest in volunteers beyond what they could extract from us, the Rector surprised me in a Vestry Meeting when he announced, without asking first, that I would serve in a 2nd role as Preschool Board Treasurer. I was always eager to help, but I would have liked to check for scheduling conflicts before being assigned another set of meetings.

Shortly afterward, I began struggling under the weight of personnel problems with the interim employee who'd sat on important financial data, used triangulation tactics in an effort to keep salary information from the Board, and generally behaved unprofessionally and uncooperatively (I later heard of similar/worse problems at her previous job).

Then, in March 202, all came to a head, when I was blindsided during a hectic workday preparing a COVID contingency plan for an 80 person consulting team. I received a call with 3 people already on the line. The Associate Rector (Elizabeth Rees) began talking, but did not introduce herself and I initially though it was someone from my office. In a confused haze, I finally asked who was calling and learned it was Rees, the Preschool Board Chair (Andrew Lund), and an interim employee. While I was still off-balance, they went on to use this impromptu meeting to push through an $18K decision, without following minimal governance / business practices one would expect from a well-run organization: no advanced notice given for the meeting, no meeting minutes documenting a major decision, and shockingly, WITHOUT EVEN REVIEWING A VALID BUDGET. I felt like I was working with a High School Student Government Association.

These problems had blown holes into several workdays and cost sleep. And so I met with the Rector, exhausted and discouraged, expecting a constructive resolution, such as discussing with employees how we might prevent this from happening in the future. But instead, Rector appeared disinterested from the beginning, did not offer even a modicum of support, and eventually cut me off mid-sentence and told me to "move forward". I spent the next ten days trying to be "ok" with the handling of this matter before resigning.

Interestingly, the Rector usually loves offering syrupy sweet apologies for minor things, even when he isn't at fault, prompting the "poor guy...he takes it all on himself" type of reaction. But given a substantive conflict to resolve, he'd rather just "move forward".

Someone had once told me the Rector caused divisiveness between parishioners. It took me awhile to see what they meant because he initially comes across as innocent and non-divisive. But it basically boils down to a divide between those who are his willing sycophants and those who are not.
Others with longer histories with the church have also told me, the church primarily exists for a handful of people, but to keep it going, they need a churn of new people coming, giving, and volunteering; also, the Vestry mainly serves as "rubber stamp" for Rector, which I also noticed; but I don’t think many of the members can even see how they’re being used.

In conclusion, you might be fine if you maintain a casual relationship with the church. But becoming a volunteer and making an investment in it comes with risks. If you're church experience is tarnished in the process, they will not care.

Of course I love that place since I'm the Organist 😊
